This depends on your teeth. If you have cavity issues, you need a cavity fighter or with loss of fluoride. If you have a lot of plaque or tartar, you need toothpaste that will soften this. If you have sensitive teeth and gums, you need a toothpaste with desensitizes. And then if you want to whiten your teeth, you need active whitening ingredients. Not to mention the different needs of dentures.
The many glossy packaging and yummy flavors can be distracting so be sure to get the tube that addresses your tooth problems and make sure it is ADA approved.
